MHLS Announcements

Library Resources Promoted at Correctional Facility Job Fair: Library resources were promoted at the 2nd annual Fishkill Correctional Facility Job Fair, to nearly 600 inmates who are planning for reentry into the community. According to US Bureau of Justice statistics, at least 95% of all State prisoners will be released from prison at some point. The library information table was staffed by Lena Smolon from MHLS Outreach Services Department, and Judy Doyle (former librarian at Green Haven Correctional Facility, currently with the Library Services Dept. of the NYS Correctional Services). Attendees were encouraged to use their facility library to brush-up their interviewing skills and resumes, and investigate different careers. They were also told about the public library resources that could help them with employment when they are released. The success of this Job Fair is a model for other correctional facilities seeking to support prisoner reentry by encouraging the coordination of programs, services, and human resources - both inside and outside prison walls - in order to ensure the successful reentry of prisoners into new lives, roles, jobs, families and communities.

MHLS Libraries
The Rhinebeck Savings Bank donated $20,000 to the Starr Library of Rhinebeck as part of a multi-year pledge to the Starr Reborn Campaign to help with the design, renovation and expansion of the facility. In addition, the bank aided the library's efforts by providing flexible financing.

The Amenia Free Library received a $500 grant from the Hudson River Bank and Trust Company Foundation. The library will use the funds to expand its summer youth reading program and to order more books on schools' summer reading lists.

Resource Sharing & Millennium
Don't Forget! June 1st will mark the introduction of a number of updates and changes to the Resource Sharing Standards document. It is important for all staff that work with Millennium to be familiar with this document. Access this document online through the Resource Sharing page at http://midhudson.org/resource/main.htm.

Please empty unnecessary review files: There are more libraries than ever using the Millennium Create Lists feature. Please check to see that you have not left review files that should be emptied.

Trustee Resources
Fifteen libraries will each receive a MHLS Incentive Program grant of $50 for having at least one of their trustees attend a spring 2006 session of MHLS Advanced Trustee Education. MHLS Advanced Trustee Education sessions focus on a different issue each year. The 2006 sessions focus on Building Community Support for Your Library. Participants commented:
· "I may have known the principles - but getting to the specifics of how to segment community and target message was most helpful."
· "Being at these meetings always focuses me on the library and its assets and needs. Listening to others is always enlightening so I think a little more broadly than day-to-day."
· "Really enjoyed it! Learned a lot."

This session will be offered twice more this year, in the fall, at the following locations. Register now at
http://www.midhudson.org/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp
· Tuesday, October 17 from 6:00 - 8:00pm at the East Fishkill Community Library (348 Route 376 in Hopewell Junction)
· Saturday, October 21 from 10:00am-12:00pm at the Catskill Public Library (1 Franklin Street in Catskill)

Programming
MHLS Piggyback Performers Listing: Still looking for performers for your summer schedule? Check out the MHLS Piggyback Performers listing at
http://midhudson.org/program/Piggyback.htm. There you will find all the performers your neighboring libraries have booked to date and you might piggyback with them to hire someone for the same day, thus reducing/sharing costs. If you have people booked and haven't sent them to us for the list, please do. Note the format of the info: name of performer, date, time of performance, cost and contact info for you and the performer. [Please note: Both Youth and Adult performances are welcome for the list.]

Administration & Management
More patrons are interacting with their libraries online: "A 2005 OCLC survey on Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources showed that 42% of respondents considered their online library as an information source, while 55% would opt for the brick and mortar. And that gap is closing. More patrons are interacting with their libraries online - 23.8% more in 2004." -Raya Kuzyk, "A Reader At Every Shelf," Library Journal, 2.15.06
