Traveling Exhibition Opportunities

Two Traveling Exhibition Opportunities from the ALA Public Programs Office:
Libraries interested in hosting either exhibition can download the application and guidelines at http://www.ala.org/publicprograms or request a copy by sending an e-mail message to publicprograms@ala.org. Applications are due by February 9, 2007.

-"Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World." The exhibition will consist of six sections of colorful, freestanding photo-panels incorporating representations of artifacts from the original Franklin exhibition, and a new text written by the curator. Exhibition content is arranged in thematic sections showing Franklin in the Boston of his youth, Franklin's family and personal life, as well as the years when he built his business as Philadelphia's premier printer. The exhibit also looks at Franklin's commitment to public service, his interests in medicine and public health, and his work in science and philosophy. Franklin's political career in England, France and the US, and his contributions to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and other major documents are the subjects of the final two sections of the exhibit.
-"Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country."
"Lewis and Clark" will bring public audiences a new set of ideas about the encounters of Native Americans with the US Corps of Discovery between 1804 and 1806, and will trace the dramatic impact of those encounters during the subsequent two centuries. Exhibit visitors will be offered unique opportunities to explore the "Indian Country" as it existed at the beginning of the 19th century; to glimpse the variety of relationships Native peoples and the Lewis and Clark party forged with one another; to view the impact of the American presence on the Indian Country; and to reflect on the efforts of contemporary reservation communities to support and sustain the Indian Country and its remarkable cultures in the 21st century.

Both 1,000-square-foot exhibits would begin circulating to selected libraries in November 2007 for six-week periods. Selected libraries are expected to present at least two free public programs featuring a lecture or discussion by a qualified scholar on exhibition themes. All showings of the exhibition will be free and open to the public.

MHLS Libraries
The Poughkeepsie Beat, a local weekly newspaper, has named the Poughkeepsie Public Library District their "Organization of the Year." "The Poughkeepsie Public Library District was willing to work with residents to put forth a project that would garner voters' support, replacing an overly ambitious $24 million project for a more feasible $14.5 million renovation plan after public comment last winter. For its diligence in working for a better library and ultimately a better community, the Weekly Beat names the district its 2006 Organization of the Year."

Resource Sharing & Millennium
MILLENNIUM List: Last week's upgrade showed one of the strengths of the MHLS-MILLENIUM Listserv. Automated Systems Manager, Laurie Shedrick, was able to communicate with all libraries in a timely manner when things didn't go as planned the morning of November 28th. However it became evident that not all libraries were checking the list before calling in to MHLS. Those that were checking the list were kept apprised, step-by-step, of the actions MHLS was taking to solve the issues and how member libraries could help. Be sure to have a least one staff person check the MHLS-MILLENNIUM list on a regular basis throughout the day. Subscription information for the list is available at http://www.midhudson.org/MHLS/listserv/listservs.htm.

REMINDER - 2007 Closed Dates: 2007 will be here before you know it. It is time to get your dates in to Laurie [lshedrick@midhudson.org] to be entered into the Millennium closed dates table. The dates must be submitted to MHLS at least four weeks prior to the end of the year for most libraries.

Youth Services
Last week MHLS sent out a system-wide press release to all media outlets, "Give your children the gift of a life-long love of reading - Children's librarians recommend books for the holidays." An expanded list of recommended books is now available on the MHLS home page: http://midhudson.org for you to share with your patrons through your web site, newsletter or as a handout in your library. Thanks to the youth services librarians of MHLS who contributed to the listing! [Looking for grown-up ideas too? Check out the "Gift Guide for Library Lovers," created by J. Siminitus: http://www.kn.att.com/wired/fil/pages/listgiftguij.html]

Trustee Resources
An "Unattended Children in the Library" policy is an important one to have for your library. A new resource has been added to the MHLS Sample Public Library Policy & Development Tips page for this policy - a document on Children and Libraries authored by a lawyer for the New Jersey Library Association and the New Jersey Library Trustee Association. This document is provided as background information on this topic. Every public library is encouraged to adopt its own policy regarding unattended children and have the local policy reviewed by the library's attorney. To access the MHLS Policies page go to http://midhudson.org then Trustee Resources or get there directly at http://midhudson.org/department/member_information/library_policies.htm.

The Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science has announced that applications for the second year of the new Ph.D. focused on Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions are now being accepted. Applications and more information can be found at: http://www.simmons.edu/gslis/phdmlip. The deadline for submitting application is February 1, 2007.
