What’s new with the Health Information Project? When you go to the Project website at http://hip.midhudson.org, this is what you’ll find:
· 31 new DVDs with the teen seal of approval. Interns worked at 5 Project Centers this past summer evaluating videos for the purpose of finding those that would be the most meaningful to their peers. The results are now on the library shelves, ready for System-wide circulation.
· 15 top-ranked, teen-focused websites. Also reviewed by interns, these run the gamut from general health and social information to ones that concentrate on specific issues. These are reliable sites that teens can use for school assignments or for their own personal information needs.
· An up-to-date consumer health information page. This page has links to websites that are listed under easy-to-search headings, including general health, mental health, drugs, information on physicians, hospitals, care options & insurance, and topic-specific sites. Now, the page has a new, streamlined appearance.
To help promote these resources to your community, you can go to the online Material Request Form to order:
· New Project bookmarks designed just for teens. (Available in packets of ten – great for in-library distribution and to local schools)
· Project Resource Guides and
· Post cards

Sally Alderdice, of the Claverack Free Library, recently marked her 30th year as director. Sally claims she’s never had a day when she got out of bed and didn’t want to come to work, she believes when you love your job, 30 years passes in a heartbeat. Sally began her career at the New York Public Library but moved north to raise her family. Claverack has changed a lot since Sally moved up here, “Claverack is no longer a small library sitting in the middle of nowhere,” she says, “ but rather a small library sitting in the middle of everywhere.” Sally notes one of the benefits of working in a small library is that the people you meet often become your friends. Sally currently serves on the MHLS Continuing Education Advisory Committee and Central Library/Collection Development Advisory Committee and has taken a few turns as chair of the Director’s Association. Not to mention her pivotal role in the Columbia County Directors Group. The Hudson Area Association Library has received a $250,000 grant through the NYS Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). The grant will fund a multiphase project to stabilize and restore the historic building, constructed in 1818, and address issues relating to health and safety, energy conservation and protecting and preserving the library's collections, as well as a reconfiguration of the programming space. The EPF program, created in 1993, is funded primarily through the real estate transfer tax and provides a dedicated source of funding for a variety of environmental projects and programs administered by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Mary Maynard, director of the Chatham Public Library from 1979 until her retirement in 1992, passed away November 25th. Mary loved local history and spoke nationally on the topic.

According to Jessica Shaw’s “The Shaw Report,” getting a library card is “in,” while buying books online is “out” and reading in the bookstore is “so five minutes ago.” Entertainment Weekly, Nov. 30, p. 13 (from American Libraries Direct, 11/29/07)
