The Mahopac Library SmartNet Program Launched: SmartNet is a series of classes that will cover topics ranging from social networking and identity theft to finding legitimate information online. The first class, held April 30, focused on Internet-savvy kids and their online activity. Two Carmel police officers ran the class and approximately 40 people attended. "The program evolved as the library and community members looked for a way to raise awareness of danger on the Internet following the arrest of a Southeast man who, police said, had been downloading child pornography on the library's computers. After the arrest, library officials and community members formed the Internet-Use Task Force. The coalition's goal was to examine the library's Internet policies and run a series of community education programs."

Libraries using locking media cases are sending these items unlocked. Movement in delivery can cause the cases to return to their locked state. If you should receive it in the locked state, please package the item up and clearly label it "DO NOT CHECK IN - Unlock case and return to [your library's name here]". Unlocking the cases requires a key. Libraries may choose to purchase their own key (Midwest tapes $75.99). The owning library will unlock and return the item.ILL patrons, ptype 5, should not have manual fines. All manual fines on these records will be removed by MHLS staff. Please let your staff know they should not be adding manual fines for this ptype. These patron records have been set up to facilitate Inter library loaning for schools, libraries, hospitals and other facilities. Thanks for your cooperation!
Marketing, Advocacy & Funding
"Be Attentive to Your Donors. A study of high net worth American donors conducted late in 2008 by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University for Bank of America revealed that the No. 1 reason donors stopped giving to a particular charity was "no longer feeling connected to the organization." This is no surprise. All donors need to feel appreciated. They need to feel informed. Their confidence in the charity needs to be constantly reinforced. At no time can a nonprofit operate as though its donors will continue giving no matter how they're treated." Trend Spotting: The number of online adults who have used online classified ads has more than doubled in the past four years. Almost half (49%) of internet users say they have ever used online classified sites, compared with 22% of online adults who had done so in 2005. On any given day about a tenth of internet users (9%) visit online classified sites, up from 4% in 2005. These are among the main findings of an April 2009 survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project survey. They highlight the growing importance of such sites to internet users and reflect the changes in the audience for classified ads - both those who place them and those who make purchases. SRP PR Gets a Boost from the NYS Assembly: The NYS Library has announced the coordination of the 2009 New York Statewide Summer Reading Program (SSRP) with the NYS Assembly Summer Reading Challenge (SRC). The SRC is the Assembly's free reading program which offers kids who read and submit their reading record to the Assembly person a signed certificate. Soon, schools and families will receive the SRC brochure from their Assembly person or through their child's school. The hope is that this collaboration will clear up the confusion between the SRC and the local public library's summer reading program. Kids can participate in both programs this summer; they can enjoy their local library's summer reading activities plus get a certificate from their Assembly person when they go back to school in the fall. A copy of the SSRP public service announcement (PSA) has been provided to the NYS Assembly broadcasting stations. The PSA will be aired during individual Assembly members' weekly TV broadcasts.
