(School Address)

Dear (Whichever school officials/staff you wish to address):

The (your library name) Public Library is pleased to be taking part in the Mid-Hudson Library System's Battle of the Books this summer at our library as part of our summer reading program. Battle of the Books is a nationally recognized literature contest in which young people answer trivia questions based on specific books which they have read.

As you know, it is often difficult to successfully promote reading among middle school students. Battle of the Books is designed to engage young people in reading good literature and then to put them together with other students in a friendly competition based on those books.

The (your library) Library will be inviting student in grades 6-9 to join our library's Battle of the Books team. During the local competition this summer, we will identify five students and two alternates who will make up the library team. This team will then represent our library and our community at a regional Battle of the Books competition with other public library teams in the fall in Poughkeepsie.

We hope that your and your staff will support students’ participation in the Battle of the Books by accepting publicity posters/flyers in your school buildings and by encouraging students to take part. Invitations to the regional competition will also go out to schools and we hope you will join us to root for your students. This is the 2nd Annual Battle of the Books regional competition; the teens who took part in 2005 enjoyed the experience so much they begged for libraries to continue it during the year!.

Thank you for helping the (your library) Public Library foster a love of good teen literature among the young people in our community.

Very truly yours,
