- Why do gaming programs? (Ideas taken from Gamers in the Library by Eli Neiburger)
- To market library to new patrons (i.e., teens, 20 somethings & nonreaders) & get them to return
- To provide recreational content the community wants and enjoys (Remember when videos weren't appropriate for library collections?)
- To foster modern literacy--information processing, pattern recognition, multitasking, physical coordination--needed in today's multithreaded society
- To be part of cultural phenomenon appealing to ALL ages (69% of heads of households play games; average gamer is over 30; 25% of US gamers are over 50)
- To offer currently popular format/programs so teens will consider library relevant in future
- To provide opportunity for positive social interaction and friendly competition across ethnic, socioeconomic and *clique* lines
- To offer enticing programs in a safe *third place*--not home and not school
- To help kids and teens master 20 of the 40 developmental assets essential for raising healthy, responsible teens
