NYS Troopers Child Safety Programs

EZ Library Program Database - Check out safety programs!

A. The local NYS Police have officers who are trained to present child safety programs and are willing to come out to libraries to make this presentation. It is a program they do in the schools but if you offer it to parents in your community, you are training parents as trainers who will then reinforce what their children saw in school.

The presentation consists of a video which shows different potential abduction scenarios. The audience is asked what the child in the situation might have done differently to remain safe. The officers offer a variety of tips for families so that children can be safer as they are out in the world.

For libraries in Columbia, Dutchess and Putnam counties, contact Trooper Kristi Wilson at (845) 677-7431 or KWilson@troopers.state.ny.us at Troop K in Millbrook.

For Greene and Ulster counties, contact Trooper Victor Pirtle at (845) 567-0052 or VPirtle@troopers.state.ny.us at Troop F.

B. Be aware that we have two videos in the MHLS online catalog which deal with child safety issues. One is titled Kid Escape! from Child Abductors and the other is Date Escape! Video Training. Additional resources can be found in the catalog by doing a keyword search using the terms Safety Education or Missing Children.

C. You can also go to the Escape School web site for information about child safety and to contact people who will do a free program at your library.

D. The Howland Library offered a child safety program which was geared for parents and children together. It was done by Gloria Baker of Healthy Kick in Poughkeepsie and Hudson River Healthcare in Beacon. She had a teacher accompany her and a local Juvenile Officer came in to speak and answer questions. Gloria can be contacted at Healthy Kick at 845-454-8204. She also does a "Bully Proof Your Child" interactive workshop.
