The Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) strengthens public libraries across the Mid-Hudson region by coordinating shared services, technology infrastructure, professional expertise, and regional collaboration.
Serving 66 public libraries across five counties, MHLS helps local libraries maximize public investment, expand access to information and technology, and deliver high-quality services efficiently and equitably to communities of all sizes.
By operating cooperatively, libraries are able to provide broader collections, stronger technology, and more responsive public services than any library could sustain independently.
MHLS operates under a 5-year Plan of Service developed in partnership with our member libraries and guided by community needs. Our work falls into two broad areas: Resource Sharing and Library Sustainability.
Resource Sharing
Member libraries save their communities over $12 million annually by sharing items.
MHLS provides the regional infrastructure that allows libraries to share collections, technology, and services across county and municipal boundaries, reducing duplication and increasing access for residents throughout the region.
Shared Library Catalog & Borrowing System
MHLS maintains the integrated library system and online catalog that connect residents to more than 3 million shared items across 66 libraries.
This cooperative approach expands public access while reducing local costs for technology, cataloging, and collection management.
There are more than 1.7 million unique titles in the shared online catalog and you can have physical items from any library delivered to your library.
Regional Delivery Network
MHLS coordinates the physical delivery system that transports library materials among member libraries efficiently and reliably across thousands of square miles.
This shared service dramatically increases access to materials while helping libraries avoid unnecessary duplication of collections and operating costs.
MHLS delivery services are one-seventh the cost of mailing items between libraries.
Cooperative Purchasing & Digital Access
MHLS negotiates and coordinates cooperative purchasing of digital collections, databases, streaming services, and technology platforms on behalf of member libraries.
By leveraging collective purchasing power, libraries are able to reduce costs, improve service quality, and expand equitable access to digital resources for residents throughout the region.
For every $1 invested in system services we produce $10 in service for the residents of the Hudson Valley.
Library Sustainability
MHLS helps libraries remain strong, adaptable, and fiscally responsible institutions through professional development, consulting services, technology support, and operational guidance.
As community needs evolve, MHLS helps libraries respond strategically while maintaining accountability and long-term sustainability.
Professional Development & Leadership Support
MHLS provides training, continuing education, and leadership development opportunities for library staff and trustees.
These services help local libraries stay current with emerging technologies, evolving community expectations, and best practices in public service and governance.

These shared services help libraries maintain modern technology systems at a sustainable cost.
