66 Libraries, One Great Community
The MHLS Road Trip is made possible through collaboration among the member libraries of the Mid-Hudson Library System. Each participating library offers visitors an opportunity to experience something different — from historic Carnegie libraries and rural branches to newly renovated community hubs and innovative programming spaces. Together, these libraries form a shared regional network that expands access to information, resources, and opportunities for residents across the Hudson Valley.
The program invites community members to explore the public libraries throughout Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, and Ulster counties. During Road Trip events, participants visit the MHLS libraries, collect stamps or other keepsakes along the way, and earn commemorative souvenirs for reaching participation milestones. All the while, experiencing the unique character of each community and the many ways libraries support and enrich everyday life.
Whether someone visits a few nearby libraries or sets out to explore every location in the system, the Road Trip celebrates curiosity, lifelong learning, local discovery, and the power of public libraries to connect communities.
Why the MHLS Road Trip?
The MHLS Road Trip was created to encourage people to:
Explore the Hudson Valley
Libraries are often located in the heart of their communities. Visiting libraries throughout the region gives participants an opportunity to discover local businesses, historic downtowns, parks, restaurants, and cultural destinations along the way.
Connect with Library Resources
Every library has something unique to offer. The Road Trip helps residents discover the breadth of services available through public libraries, from books, technology, and digital resources to community programs, makerspaces, local history collections, and more.
Celebrate Community
Libraries are trusted public spaces that bring people together. The Road Trip highlights the important role libraries play in strengthening civic life, fostering connection, and improving quality of life throughout the region.
Share the Experience
Participants are encouraged to document and share their journeys through photos, stories, and social media, helping spread awareness of the value and impact of public libraries.
