Alison Macrina, director of Library Freedom Project, will present on artificial intelligence and related technologies, and what librarians need to know about this rapidly emerging environment. She’ll share a definitional overview of things like AI, machine learning, neural networks, and chatbots, as well as current and potential applications of these technologies – especially how they might apply to the library world. Alison will also discuss the serious ethical, privacy, and existential concerns that numerous scientists, academics, and other thinkers have expressed about the AI environment, and what efforts exist to reject unsafe uses of these technologies.

Alison is an activist librarian and the founder and director of Library Freedom Project (LFP). Alison started LFP in 2015 to organize and build community with other librarians who are dedicated to library values of privacy,  intellectual freedom, social responsibility, and the public good.
