Tax Cap Update

Tax-Cap Tax Cap Update: The 2017 inflation factor for those libraries with a January 1 – December 31 fiscal year has been announced by the Office of the State Comptroller. It is 0.68%. This is the second year in a row it is below 1%. This applies to all libraries that have ever had a public vote on their budget. Even if you aren’t planning to hold a vote this year. The online “tax cap form” must be filed with the NYS Office of the State Comptroller between when the form becomes available and prior to adoption of your budget for libraries with a calendar fiscal year (Jan-Dec) and by March 1 for libraries with a school fiscal year (June-July). MHLS Trustee Elections

The election of MHLS trustees will be an item of business at the MHLS Annual Membership Meeting.

MHLS is governed by a fifteen-member board, three trustees from each of the five counties served.

Procedures for Election of Trustees:
Article II. Nominations:

Section 2.01 -The county library association of each county for which a trustee is to be elected shall meet for the purpose of selecting a candidate from their county to nominate at the MHLS Annual Membership Meeting. The chair of the county library association shall submit to the MHLS Executive Director one name for each county vacancy no later than two months prior to the Annual Membership Meeting.

Section 4.03 – Each member library is a voting unit having one vote.

Five MHLS Board of Trustee vacancies are to be filled for terms commencing in January 2017. To read the bios of the nominees check out this week’s MHLS Bulletin.

Drawing on 20 years’ experience as a trainer and coach, Laurie Brown will show you how to create a welcoming, friendly experience for patrons, students, and other library users. Satisfied customers mean good vibes, and happy library users are part of a strong library. In addition to learning how to fulfill the expectations of the people who use your library, you will also get pointers on listening and communications skills to help your conversations with angry, chatty, or overly demanding patrons as gracefully as possible.
